The 2013 COPUS Invitational (II)

starfish On April 12-14, 2013, COPUS convened its second Invitational Unconference at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, CA. This conference was small in size (~ 35 maximum), but huge in impact. It followed from the initial COPUS Unconference held at the Biosphere 2 in Arizona in 2012 in which 57 individuals came together, mostly meeting for the first time, to talk about a common concern - how the public perceives and interacts with science.

Like the first unconference, the 2013 event brought together an eclectic and diverse group of science professionals and enthusiasts to discuss sciences' public interfaces. Many of the 2012 attendees (known as the COPUS Corps) returned, but we also invited a few new individuals who were enthusiastic about participating in COPUS. What arose was a confirmation that COPUS needed to be sustained, that the COPUS Corps consists of "do-ers" who are at their best when they are collaborating and making things happen, and that each individual involved in COPUS gains from the strengths and energies of other Corps members.

During the 2013 Unconference, a distinct mission evolved: to capture the potential energy from the first year's event and turn it into a force to rally the COPUS community. The thirty-six attendees enjoyed the same shared conversations and sense of renewal that made COPUS I unique, but they also committed to building a framework through which we will facilitate collaborations, engage the broader scientific community, and create measurable impact in bringing science to the public. This event was a beginning rather than an end unto itself.

Another celebration of science is in the making, so stay tuned to hear more about what the COPUS Corps is building and how you can join us in our goals for 2015.
